Formation of MDI as an institute
- MDI was formed on 1st August 2007
- Modeled on Korean Development Institute (KDI) as a research institute on public policy
- Reports to EPU
- Collaborates with ministries/agencies and value-adds to Malaysian development policies
- Promotes strong links with research fraternity (domestic and international)

Functions
As a “think-tank”:
- To develop strategic macro-directions and strategies for growth and development along the thrusts of the National Mission
- To develop and undertake systematic policy research and evaluation programs related to the National Mission
- To provide in-depth insights for the formulation of socio-economic and development policy
- To propose policy recommendations in resolving socio-economic and development issues.
